Now that the process of finding, purchasing, and moving into your new condominium in Toronto or house in Pittsburgh is complete, you may find your mind returning to the question of "but what if I lose all of this?" It is natural for people who have just achieved a dream to worry about seeing it all crumble down around their ears. Homeowner's insurance make sure that there will be someone there to give you money and support after a disaster strikes, but what about preventing disaster from striking in the first place?
There is, unfortunately, no protection you can buy against freak acts of nature like hurricanes or floods (unless you want to leave boards over your windows and stack your yard with sandbags, but this would make your house look a little crazy next to the other Toronto beach homes). There is, however, a way to foil potential home invaders and thieves before they strike. In fact, there are several ways, but they all fall under the umbrella of security systems.
One of the most common types of security system among those with large new homes in London. Ontario are the monitored systems. Getting one begins with a visit from the security company (many of them are nationwide) for an estimate. Then a security expert will arrive to wire all the windows and doors in your house with an alarm and install a panel by which you and whomever you choose to trust with the code can arm and disarm the alarm. If a door or window is breached, it will set off a silent alarm that alerts the security company, who will send the police.
Not all alarm systems that protect you from unauthorized ingress and egress through your doors and windows are silent or monitored by a private contractor, however. There are some cheaper systems that you might see on the less at-risk Ajax homes whereby tripping the alarm sounds a loud piercing noise to frighten away the thief and alert you an your neighbors. It may or may not be monitored by a security company depending on which type you buy.
The final type of security system is a lower grade type that you can buy at most hardware and home improvement stores. They can consist of motion sensor alarms or floodlights or even a closed circuit TV camera or two that you can monitor through your television. They're designed to be simple enough to install yourself. If you've got an out of the way Prince Edward Island cottage with a very low risk of a break in, simply buying the stickers announcing that the home is monitored by an alarm company can be enough to deter potential thieves.
